N E W KoB Progressive Styling Contest Entry
Today I entered this San Jose juniper for the progressive styling contest at Knowledge of Bonsai.
I obtained the collected tree from Hollowcreek Farms in 2005.The juniper was planted into the nursery container in 2003.
This tree is app. 40 to 50 years old, vigorous and healthy.
It will be a challenge to style this tree, but that is what I like.I love the old live veins and the details of knots, crevasses and old shari. The plan is to create a double trunk cascade. The two trunks are connected and share the same rootsystem. It will be still challenging to make it to work.
The contest requires to send in progression photos and to verbally document the work performed.I believe this contest has great learning and teaching value. So if you feel like participate and challenge yourself to progress and creativity.I will post the development of the tree to completion here.
After cleanup one can finally see the tree! You can realize now what I called a challenge, the twisted 2 trunks. But I think I see a potential line to proceed. Please don’t forget, this is a contest entry and I am not supposed to receive any advice,so I do not expect any comments (other than “Huh,I am really sorry you have to deal with this tree”..;)

Two trunk cascade,still the plan..
Sunday,April 29
The tree is still resting and enjoying life..The tricky part is to technically style the tree(esp. during this time of the year)without risking the material or compromising the allover design. This is why I work with long breaks, always watching the tree for signs of distress. For now I seem to work with the tree and not against it…:)
The jins and shari are created, the existing deadwood is refined. Some shari need more time to be completed in order not to risk the health of the tree.
