Surviving the storm

March 22nd, 2008 by Paul Stokes

Friends,
I thought that the winter season was over for the year, boy was I wrong! We got blasted by 8-18 inches of the lovely white stuff on friday. Maybe this is the last one?

I survived with a sever case of the flu, not the stomach flu, but the flu non the less.
Talk to you soon.

The contests are on!

March 18th, 2008 by Paul Stokes

Well. . .it is that time of year again. Time to knock off all of the snow, pull out that tree that you were thinking of working on. Digging the camera out of that dang old junk drawer.

OR

Tidying up that masterpiece or soon-to-be masterpiece.

And taking some good quality pictures.

We are always looking for more quality prizes, no donation is too small.

Is spring here? Maybe?

March 13th, 2008 by Paul Stokes

Well, it has been a long and arduous winter. We broke the all time snow fall amount for one winter season, which was 80 inches. We got a somewhere around 90 inches total of the white stuff.  And those numbers are just the snow fall, I would guess that we got at least 10-15 inches of rain on top of it!My attitude twards winter!

I have been so busy these last few months, even too busy to post here.

Johnny Depp is currently filming a movie in Columbus maybe 30 miles away, and I don’t really care. Even though it is the only thing everyone at work seem to be able to talk about.

Exciting things in store for the KoB. If you like our contests and wish we would give out better prizes, feel free to donate a prize or even donate to us, donations are being saved up for a good prize in the future.

Regards.

Winter is Officially Here

December 2nd, 2007 by Paul Stokes

What a way to start December!
Yesterday (Saturday, Dec 1) it started snowing at about 10am. And did not stop until about 9pm, and was replaced with freezing rain.

5 inches of snow + 1-2 inches of freezing rain = misery.

This storm as ravaged most of the country and I hope every one is well.

You may have noticed

October 25th, 2007 by Paul Stokes

That the KoB forum was down yesterday. This was not, I repeat, was not caused by hackers!

I was doing some updates to the form, database and server. Sorry for the outage, but we are back and faster than ever!

Peter Chan’s Challenge

October 16th, 2007 by Paul Stokes

Peter Chan’s Challenge
Proudly sponsored by The Knowledge of Bonsai Forums

The contest objective is to style semi-trained stock from Peter Chan’s Herons Bonsai Nursery and style it into a presentable bonsai within the time frame allotted by the rules below.

As the aim of the Contest is educational for all, we have modified the usual “before and after photo” styling contest rules common on most forums and added a few stipulations that we feel will turn this contest into something that can be discussed, learned from, and referred to by everyone.

Each entry will consist of three parts containing the following as outlined in the rules below:

1. Three before photographs submitted with accompanying descriptive text.
2. Photographs to be submitted at quarterly [every 3 months] intervals to show progress with discriptive text.
3. Three final photographs submitted with accompanying descriptive text.

You need not be a member of The Knowledge of Bonsai Forums to enter. This contest, like all of the content on KoB, is free, viewable, and open to all who are interested. Those that wish to participate in discussions on the contest or other topics on the forum will be required to join in order to comment. The only stipulation is that you obtain your stock from Peter Chan’s Bonsai Nursery, located in the United Kingdom.

Please read all rules before submitting your entry and refer back to them before submitting your before, progression, or final photographs, in order to prevent misunderstandings or needless disqualification. Most of all, enjoy yourselves and have fun.

Only one entry will be allowed per person.

STOCK

All stock must be obtained from Peter Chan’s Bonsai Nursery. [note: you must make your own arrangements to get the stock from the nursery].

Judging will take place at a designated time at Herons Bonsai Nursery.

All Styling work must be your own. Asking for, receiving, or soliciting advice from others will be cause for disqualification.

You will have 15 months in which to complete the project

PRIZES

  • The overall winner will receive a voucher of £200 to spend at Peter Chan’s Heron Bonsai Nursery.
  • All those who bring their trees back for judging will get half their money back.
  • The best five will have a full refund.
  • Additional prizes will be awarded for the best solution to a problem and the most original design.

Always get a contract!

October 11th, 2007 by Paul Stokes

I cannot stress this enough.
If someone wants you to do some sort of work for them.
No matter how well you know each other, have the same common goals, or anything.
ALWAYS GET A CONTRACT!
Even if it is as simple as

Soandso will do the following work for soandso2. Upon completion of the project, soandso2 will pay soandso with “whateve you agreed upon” within “a time frame”

If you do not, you will get screwed.

Good luck.
